New Location About To Be Investigated.
There is a monument on top of a hill a short distance outside the town of Newmilns in East Ayrshire. The hill is called Gallowhill and the monument is to a man who occupied a farm near the site called Wee Threepwood farm.
The farmer’s name was James Smith and he had given assistance to a party of Covenanters who had escaped from the fortified Keep in newmilns. The eight men had been arrested for having a prayer meeting at a farm called Little Blackwood farm and because of the brutality shown to them the local people had attacked the Keep and helped freed them.
It would appear that all James Smith had done was give them some food, but that was enough for him to be arrested. The soldiers came to his house and after a short chase he was captured and later executed.
The photograph attached is an old one, so we have no idea what kind of state it is in now, but we are hoping to go and see it soon and it may be one we add into the tours at a later date..
