Knox’s Pulpit
The majestic Castle Campbell is situated on a scenic position high in the Ochil hills. This was a stronghold of the Campbell family who were the Earls of Argyle and chiefs of the Clan Campbell.
The family were among the strongest supporters of the Protestant Reformation in Scotland. During John Knox’s brief return to Scotland in 1555-1556, the Earl of Argyle hosted Knox here at Castle Campbell.
Knox preached for several days here to many people prior to the Reformer’s return to Geneva. After he left, the Campbell family, despite opposition from the Catholic clergy, continued to support the work of Reformation in Scotland and were at the forefront of making it happen.
There is a rocky outcrop at the castle called “Knox’s Pulpit”.
